Three AI art controversies that change how you think about creativity

When communicating with artificial intelligence, it is essential to recognize a fundamental fact: AI is not a living being. It has no consciousness, emotions, or intrinsic intention. Therefore, we cannot approach it as we would a human being – as a subject with experience, purpose, or personal responsibility for what it expresses.

What makes something human? The fact that it lives, breathes or has feelings? Or maybe a human thing is to think, invent, and create? Or maybe it is a human thing to humanise things?

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of everyday life, and the world of education is no exception. Schools and training providers now operate in a context where AI-based tools support students, teachers, and trainers in studying, planning, and producing content. This widespread presence is reshaping not only educational practices, but also the way knowledge is perceived, constructed, and shared.

Imagine two scenes. A century ago, Monet spent months watching light move across the haystacks in a field. He observed them through fog, dawn and sunset, seasonal change. The act of painting took time, but the deeper work happened before he touched the canvas. In 2025, a designer types a short prompt into an AI generator. In thirty seconds she receives numerous images of haystacks in every season. She generates variations, then more variations. After several hours she feels drained and unsure what to pick.

I am a visual artist who has been working mainly in photography for over 20 years. During this time, I have had the pleasure of working both traditionally, with negatives, developing films and making prints in the darkroom, and I have also switched to working purely digitally, using computers and printers.

What is “AI slop”?
“AI slop” refers to low-quality, mass-produced content generated by artificial intelligence. Often absurd, shocking, or even racist, these short videos are not designed to please but to capture attention—even if only for a few seconds.

Will AI revolutionise art? For the moment, the history of art is much more than AI. Art is the cave paintings, dating back over 30,000 years. Art is in Egyptian tombs, in the Greek hills, and on Italian streets, and everywhere human beings are present. Art is part of us. And over time, a few inventions changed art forever, equipping artists with new possibilities. Below, I present my personal list of ‘inventions that revolutionised art’.
